Moles are small patches on the skin that form due to collections of cells called melanocytes, which produce the colour (pigment) in your skin. The scientific name for moles is melanocytic naevi.

Moles are often a brownish colour, although some may be darker or skin-coloured. They can be flat or raised, smooth or rough, and some have hair growing from them.

Moles can change in number and appearance. Some fade away over time, often without you realising. They also sometimes respond to hormonal changes, for example during pregnancy, teenage years and in older age.

Most moles are completely harmless. However, they may be unsightly and affect your confidence and can also be a nuisance, for example if they regularly catch on your clothing.

Warts are small, rough lumps and vary in appearance depending on where they are on the body. Warts are caused by an infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV).

The virus causes an excess amount of keratin, a hard protein, to develop in the top skin layer (epidermis). The extra keratin produces the rough, hard texture of a wart.

Warts are very contagious, and close skin-to-skin contact can pass on the infection. The infection can also be transmitted indirectly from contaminated objects or surfaces, such as the area surrounding a swimming pool.

After becoming infected, it can take weeks or even months for a wart or verruca to appear.

Seborrhoeic keratoses (seborrheic wart) look like raised warts and are removed in the same way.

The medical name for skin tags is acrochordons.

Skin tags are small flesh-coloured or brown growths that hang off the skin and look a bit like warts. They are very common and harmless and can vary in size.

It is thought skin tags generally grow where skin rubs against skin or clothing commonly the neck, armpits, groins and under the breasts but they also appear anywhere on the body.

You may want to consider getting them removed if they are unsightly and affect your self-esteem, or if they snag on clothing or jewellery and cause irritation.

The Skin Consultancy removes the skin lesions or blemishes using a procedure called shave cautery and can be performed on both adults and children.

Shave cautery is a relatively painless and quick procedure giving excellent results. Patients are able to have the procedure directly after the consultation and can continue as normal afterwards.

Unfortunately, we do not offer treatment for any cancerous moles or any skin lesions or conditions affecting the genital area.

Our treatment is generally well tolerated and patients can go to work or continue as normal after the procedure.

Patients will have a small plaster covering where the skin lesion was and ideally this should remain dry for a few days but it can then be removed.

We do not use stitches in any of our treatments and therefore recovery time is much quicker.
